I’ve noticed recently that my first post on Romford Ice Rink has generated a lot of hits. Most of the search terms that have found my blog are ‘information about Romford Ice Rink’ ‘Romford Ice Rink shutting’ and ‘how much does it cost to go skating’. So as a public service I thought I would do some research about the new ice rink that Havering Council are building, list the session times (as the actual rink website is terrible) and prices. The session times are at the very end of this post.
According to the Romford Recorder the rink will shut next April (2009) and the new rink plans to open at the end of 2010. There are hopes that Havering Council will build a temporary ice rink while it is shut but they have said they cannot guarantee that. I wonder what all the staff, ice hockey players, figure skating teams and recreation skaters will do if they don’t build a temporary home. Travelling to Chelmsford, Lee Valley or Gillingham for a couple hours skating would be such a waste of time and energy (and pollution). I’ve always thought driving to Romford from Upminster took long enough with all the traffic. The new designs for the ice rink/leisure centre look very impressive and I’m glad the council have decided to keep the rink but let’s hope for a temporary ice rink for us while they are building the new one.
Thankfully I have another year of using the old Romford Ice Rink, which I did this morning and thoroughly enjoyed myself. I’ve also got interested in ice hockey again so I emailed the ladies team today but they are having trouble getting a team together. There are a few women who train on a Monday night (11.30pm!) with the men’s recreational team but I’m not sure if I could train with men (I’ve never actually played) and I’m normally in bed by 10.30pm. If they get a team together I might consider it more or maybe I should have a look to see when the Chelmsford’s ladies team train. I’m quite proud that I actually emailed about the ladies team – years ago I would of been too chicken to even do that! Here is a picture of my hockey boots (Daoust 501 Titanium).
Below are the times for Romford Ice Rink and the only price I know of is the Saturday session which costs £5.90 without skate hire, sorry I don’t know how much skate hire is. Update – 27 July 08 (just found out that it costs £7.60 to go skating with skate hire on a Saturday).

Hi Just found your blog while looking for recreational ice hockey, im like you,mad keen skater in my teens but now 40 and just started taking my son ,remembering how much fun it was!! been to romford sat afternoons for the last few weeks now. do u know if they do a session where people can just go and play hockey for fun??
Geoff
Hi – I know that the Tornadoes (rec team) play on a Monday night (11.30pm). Not sure who to contact about this but next time you are at the rink I’m sure someone there will be able to help. Good luck!
Maybe i’ll ask when i get a bit less rusty.
I was gutted to find my old bauer turbo’s were rotten in the loft! first go back was on the hire skates .Just as i thought it was all coming back to me the front dug in and down i went, back ache for 3 days.
I so need some new hockey skates lol.
Blimey I’ve not heard about Bauer Turbos in years – everyone had them back in those days. Hire skates are a nightmare – all the kids at the rink have hockey boots from Decathlon (they must be cheap!). Falling over does hurt a lot more nowadays, I’m not as agile as I used to be.
Your right about decathlon, i just got my son some hockey skates for 16 quid!! im going to be tarty at get the new bauer ones lol , maybe get down there next saturday to try them out and hopefully not injure myself again! i don’t bounce as well as i used to. getting older is so not good.
How much is the Saturday Disco?,,x
Hi Nicole, I’m not sure but next time I go to Romford Ice Rink I will find out. Thanks for reading my blog!
What a pair of skates, almost brought a tear to my eyes. How difficult is it to find a pair similar for sale? Have been searching since my last pair was stolen.
Dominic
Bit of a thread reasurection here …..not played hockey since I was 16, and last skated in Ridell 411′s, always loved Daoust you have a damn fine pair of skates there
im 36 now and going to do some rec hockey traing and thought id try and find some 501′s which brought me to your post – did you ever get to train / play ?
Hi Ross – thanks for the comment. No, I never did train or play and to be honest I haven’t been skating for a few years now since damaging my elbow in a fall. One day I’ll get back in to it, just in time for Romford Ice Rink to close
Are you till campaigning to keep the rink open, now that there are further talks to close it?
