A couple of weeks ago I brought two albums from Amazon – now I could of got them on iTunes but I kind of like have the real thing in my hand. I got (as you can see by the title) Roisin Murphy’s Overpowered and Arcade Fire’s Neon Bible. Roisin Murphy is the singer from Moloko – most people will remember Sing it Back, the club hit of 1999. Overpowered is her second solo album and the reason for going to buy it was from the title song ‘Overpowered’ which was on a dance compilation album that I had on my iPod. If you like dance music that you can sing along to then you will really like this album. This is my album of the moment and I love tracks like Movie Star, Dear Miami and of course, Overpowered.
Now for me buying Arcade Fire’s Neon Bible album is purely for selfish reasons. I first saw them playing live at Glastonbury (on the TV) and their song No Cars Go was just brilliant and very catchy. I would say they are a folk band but on wikipedia they are indie rock band. As well as the usual instruments like guitars and drums, they also use instruments like the harp, accordion, hurdy gurdy and the mandolin. Back to my selfish reason for buying this album and that is so I can sleep on long-haul flights. British Airways had their album on their in-flight entertainment system and while flying to and from San Francisco I listened to the album. Both times I managed to sleep which I never do on flights. All the way to Australia last year I didn’t sleep at all. So to get 45-60 mins of sleep was bliss. I now have their album on my iPod so when I go on a long-haul flight again I can listen to it and replay it over and over. This might be my only way of getting a couple of hours of sleep in. No Cars Go is still a great song and the rest of the album is OK – not a favourite but I do know most of the songs sub-consciously.
